who are we?
Pastor Gideon Makuthi, the pastor of Salama Baptist Church and the founder of Salama Kenya Baptist Ministries (SKBM) which serves the eastern part of Kenya, and his wife Grace, started Salama Baptist Church founded Salama Baptist Orphanage. The orphanage ministry started when SKBM started evangelizing the surrounding villages through mobile medical outreach, house to house evangelism, or providing food and clothing to the needy. . They began to come in contact with orphaned children that had been left alone and uncared for. Sometimes left in the care of their older siblings. It became very difficult to reach out to these needy children with the gospel who had no food, no home, no clothing, or medication and other life necessities. SKBM started bringing these children to Salama Baptist Church where they started taking care of them. Gideon didn’t have the money to support these children or a place for them to sleep, but he knew this was the Lord’s work and he would provided.
God did provide. Gideon and Grace now partner with First Baptist Church of Powell, Tennessee, and have since formed a satellite office location in Knoxville, Tennessee. The Knoxville location is where all of the business for SBO is handled, such as: fundraising, donations, sponsors, and etc.

What we do
We at the Salama Baptist Orphanage provide shelter, care, and education to 45-50 orphaned or abandoned children at any given time. Our operations began with evangelism to the villages surrounding Salama, where we were astounded by the number of orphaned or abandoned children. We began taking in and caring for children at Salama Baptist Church, and we were eventually blessed with the resources to build the building in which we currently operate. We hope to eventually have the space and resources to also care for the many orphaned and abandoned children in Salama and the surrounding areas who still remain in need of our help.
To date the orphanage has close to 50 orphans who need sponsors. There are 75 other orphans, whom they have identified and will consider to join our orphanage when the orphanage is able.
